A canonical name (Cname) record is used when running multiple services, like an FTP and a webserver, from a single IP address. The Cname is a resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS) that specifies that the domain name is an alias of another.
Using a Cname allows each service to have its own entry in the DNS (i.e. ftp.example.com and www.example.com). Another example would be running a mail server and
website off the same IP (www.example.com and mail.example.com) where “mail.example.com” is a Cname.
